When Rick and I decided to come to the Netherlands it was for two purposes; he to follow the route his father took during World War 2, and I to discover family roots in northern Netherlands and Germany. What is uncanny is that both the routes (his and mine) intersect at Nieuweschans, Netherlands. Divine intervention….maybe. For both of us I think it has been a reflective and emotional time. It is humbling to hear the people of Holland repeatedly thank you for your father’s service, to walk the graveyards where hundreds lay who gave their lives so others may be free.
This post is dedicated to my father-in-law, Ronald Scott, for his service given and to my beloved husband who has honored his dad through this journey.
If you have ever seen the movie, “A Bridge Too Far” then you will know the history behind this specific bridge above. It was a crucial bridge for the battle at Arnhem. The following pictures are the memorial places we have visited along the route through the Netherlands.
Thank you for spending time today with me and all those gone before.
Good for you Diane! What a special trip that must have been. And how neat that your backgrounds intersected at one point. This was probably a trip that contained many mixed emotions but it’s so good to see the two of you enjoying your many travels. I’ll look forward to seeing where your next adventure takes you!
